It doesn’t get better than this

A delightful young girl joined us as a new Year 7 student. At that time she was in the middle of her battle with cancer and was wheel-chair bound. I don’t need to detail the nature of a battle with cancer, far too many of us have/have seen loved ones go through this fight – and a fight it certainly is. So we are familiar with the treatments, hospital visits, highs and lows, chemotherapy and its very debilitating initial effects etc. From my experiences, the cancer sufferers I have known, all seem to have one enduring characteristic – their stubborn determination to win their fight. And in this, our young lady has been at the top of the league! We’ve all seen her struggle out of her wheel-chair, stumble when taking hesitant steps on crutches, fight to undertake the very simplest of tasks that we all take for granted, and join clubs to be like everyone else even when the pain of doing so is immense. Yet, she has not only done all this and to great effect, but she has done it all with a smile on her face! I know it’s been a tough battle for her and her family, but she is winning – was it ever in doubt for someone like her?! And what a fantastic moment, two years later when she could be spotted walking happily around the school or bounding into my office to show me a trophy, certificate or medal she had recently won.
