Arriving at school one morning I was surprised to detect that my office computer seemed to be making a strange tweeting sound. I turned my computer off and then switched it on again and then pressed all the buttons and undertook all the tasks that someone with as limited IT skills as I possess can do. All this failed so I did the only other thing possible – I contacted our trusty IT technician and begged for help. Normally, such is his power over IT, his mere presence in my room seems to solve most problems. He wasn’t answering so I left a voice message, giving as much information as possible. I explained the problem and even held the phone to the computer so that he might be able to analyse the very distinct sound that my computer was making. Having done that I went off to various meetings and didn’t think any more about this until I next bumped into Mr. IT magician later that morning.
He looked at me with a somewhat wry expression on his face. He very politely informed me that he too undertook the checks and procedures that I did, but when they failed to shed any light on the problem he simply went into the top drawer of my desk and turned off the wake-up alarm that was sounding on the confiscated mobile phone that I put in there the previous evening!.
