It was a cold and frosty morning which would see four lessons of cross country take place.
The course was on a large scrubland area adjacent to the school and flanked by residential houses.
The first run did not go to plan as a significant number of the class (Year 8s) were extremely late in returning, complaining that they had got lost.
So to avoid further problems a member of staff would go out to a central viewing point on the course and direct the runners.
I was kitted up for running, but as I was to be fairly stationary I wore my long green overcoat/mac to keep warm.
However the sight of a man in a mac with apparently no trousers on (underneath were my shorts), watching little boys and girls running around understandably alarmed a resident in one of the houses.
The concerned person then ‘phoned the police who in turn contacted the school with their heightened concerns.
As a consequence, hastily made directional arrows were then put around the course to avoid further alarm.
