Last week I received an e-mail from an ex student. It was one of the nicest messages I have ever received. It was from a young man who was thanking us for giving him the confidence to believe in himself, and how we reminded him that, with determination, everyone can fulfil their dreams. He wrote, for example of how, week after week, for months on end he would attend football practices and then look eagerly to see if his name would be on the subsequent team list. Week after week, his name never appeared until finally, with almost disbelief, he saw his name on the list. He remembers the PE teacher who taught him never to give up. This young man found learning as challenging as he did playing football. For years he was given learning support and encouragement, and was taught never to underestimate his own abilities. He thanked me, and many other members of staff, for believing in him. Best of all, he concluded his letter by saying that, after years and years of effort he had finally fulfilled his dream, and was indeed writing this email from his room at Leeds University. This was a young man with exceptional determination – we can only take credit for helping him on his way. I copied the email to the staff. So many of them replied by saying that this was a reminder as to why they get out of bed every morning and do what they do. Just occasionally, we remember that we have the best job in the world!
